A Hero Remembered: Miami Springs Gathers to Honor Officer Charles B. Stafford

As the morning sun touched the newly polished flagpoles and signage, a sea of familiar faces, including the Stafford Family and many city residents, gathered to witness the official unveiling of the Charles B. Stafford Memorial at Stafford Park. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of what "hometown" truly means.

The ribbon-cutting was graced by city and county leadership and those who carry the torch of service today, including Mayor Dr. Walter Fajet, City Manager Juan Carlos Jimenez, Councilmen Jorge Santin, Fabian Perez-Crespo, Chief of Police Matthew Castillo, Miami Commissioner Natalie Milan Orbis, and former professional baseball player, Liván Hernandez.

The Heart of the Project

The project was created and led by Eagle Scout candidate Danny Iglesias from Miami Springs’ own Boy Scout Troop 334. The project included installing a new memorial with a dedication plaque, along with flagpoles, landscaping, and benches. Danny’s leadership has done more than improve the park's physical grounds; he has created a sanctuary for reflection. It is now a place where a mother can sit with her child and explain what courage looks like, and where future generations can learn the name Charles B. Stafford.

Danny’s work has also resonated far beyond the park benches. He has been recognized in the Congressional Record by Congressman Carlos Gimenez and honored at Christopher Columbus High School during the “Do the Right Thing” ceremony. These accolades are well-deserved, but for Danny, the true reward was seeing the community he loves standing together in the park.

A Lasting Gift

As the ribbon fell, there was a shared sense of gratitude. This memorial is Danny’s gift to Miami Springs—a permanent mark of dignity and respect. It serves as a reminder that every badge represents a story, and every story deserves to be told.

Because here in Miami Springs, we don't just move on. We remember. We honor. And thanks to the dedication of a young man named Danny Iglesias, the memory of Officer Stafford will stand tall, guarded by the community he once protected.
