Labubu Fever Hits! Cute, Creepy, and Maybe Worth a Fortune

Okay Miami Springs, let’s talk about these little fuzzy troublemakers called Labubu. I just went to my kid’s open house and spotted a few hanging from backpacks like VIP passes to the coolest club in town. Naturally, I turned to my daughter and asked, “Is this really that popular?” Without missing a beat she said, “Super popular… and expensive.”
Where were these creatures born?
Labubu is a character created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, inspired by Nordic folklore and mythology. It’s part of a larger series called The Monsters, a quirky, imaginative lineup filled with oddball characters. Labubu itself is an elf-like creature with a mischievous look, pointed ears, sharp teeth, and a playful grin that walks the line between adorable and a little creepy.
The toys are produced and sold by the Chinese company Pop Mart, known for its blind-box collectibles. This “ugly-cute” aesthetic mixed with the thrill of surprise (and the hunt for rare “secret” figures) is exactly what fuels the craze.
A Little Cute… A Little Creepy
Looking at them now, If I were a teenager again, I would've definitely have a collection of Labubu's. Some people think Labubu’s giant eyes and toothy grin are irresistible. Others? Well, they’ve called it “demonic.” But honestly, like a comment I ran into online:

And because they’re released in limited editions, tracking down the rarest Labubu can feel like the ultimate Miami Springs garage sale score, except you’re definitely not paying $1 for these.
The Craze is Real, and Big Money Is on the Line
The Labubu craze has reached a whole new level, and the numbers prove it. Pop Mart’s Labubu blind boxes have already raked in $423 million in revenue, with limited supply leading to actual customer scuffles in stores. One of the most sought-after editions, the Labubu x Vans Old Skool Vinyl Plush Doll, isn’t even new , it debuted in 2023, but its rarity has made it a collector’s dream. Just this week, one eBay listing for the Vans Labubu ended with 96 bids and a jaw-dropping $10,585 price tag.
The brown doll, decked out in Vans Sk8-Mid sneakers, a matching sweatshirt, and a blue-and-orange “The Monsters” hat, now stands alongside other high-rollers in the Labubu world: the Three Wise Labubu sold for $28,300 at Sotheby’s, the Sacai x Seventeen x Labubu fetched $31,250 last month, and a life-sized version went for over $150,000 at a Chinese auction. Even police have been involved in this frenzy. In Upland, California, authorities recovered $30,000 worth of stolen Labubus from a home, ready to be resold and shipped across the country. And while some may call it a flash-in-the-pan trend, appraiser Dr. Lori says their “unique look and general appeal” make them a collectible with staying power.

The Big Question: Craze or Classic?
We’ve been here before: Beanie Babies, Treasure Trolls, Pokémon cards. Some crazes fade fast, others become lifelong collectibles. Will Labubu be the next forever favorite… or just a fun memory in a few years?
